According to puranas, Demon Hiranyakashyapu had obtained a boon from God Brahma that he could not be killed by man or beast, by day or by night , from inside or out side and also not by any weapon. After receiving such a mighty boon demon Hirnyakashyapu conquered 14 Lokas includes heaven and earth. He declared himself as God and asked people, devatas to worship him instead of Lord Vishnu.

Hiranyakasyapu's son Prahlada was a staunch Vishnu devotee as such he disobeyed his father's decision . While the whole pupil in Hiranyakashyapu's Kingdom worshipped Hiranyakashyapu , his natural son worshipped Lord Vishnu. As a father Hiranyakashyapu tried by all means to mend his son mind ,but failed to do so. He then tried to kill his son several times but each time the boy escaped from the clutches of death with the blessings of the Lord Vishnu,
After vexed up with his son , one day Hiranya kashyapu challenged Prahlada and showing to a stone pillar, asked, "if your god is omnipresent ,is he in this pillar also? ". Prahlada answered " he is present in the pillar and even in the rust". By hearing this Hiranyakashyapu got angry and slashed hard on the pillar with his club.
Suddenly , Lord Vishnu emerged from the pillar in the form of Narasimha (Half man, half lion) and slew the demon at dusk. Lord Narasimha killed the demon by keeping him on his lap and teared his heart with bare hands thus overcoming all the boons the demon attained from Brahma. Thus Demon Hirankashypu's era was ended. This was happend on 14 th day of Viasaka Month. So devotees has been observing this day as Narasimha Jayanti day .
