StaMbhadri ! This is the earlier name of present Khammam City. The name Khammam has been derived from the name of a local hill which has been called Stambhadri, that is an abode to Lord Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy and also believed to have been in existence since Tretayuga. The name of the the then town Stambhadri, later reportedly became KhaMbhadri, Khambham meTTu ,and finally to present name Khammam. The meaning of Stambhadri, Khambhadri, Khammam mettu, and Khammam is the one at the same i.e "Pillar". The city is located near the Munneru river which is a tributary of the river Krishna. As per Hindu Texts Lord Narasimha appears from a Pillar. So it is believed that Lord Narasimha appears from this Stambhadri and killed the demon Hiranyakashyapu. The ancient temple which has been exists on Stambadri Gutta is called as Stambhadri Gutta Lakshmi Narasimha Swamy Temple and it is dedicated to Lord Lakshmi
